Fever pitch hornby5/21/2023 Stadiums were no longer the preserve of working-class men but also children and women, who would soon be able to watch football more safely and probably sitting down. Being a football fan was suddenly fashionable, acceptable and almost a requirement for the up-and-coming celebrities of the day. New stadiums were being built from scratch while others were being redeveloped at great expense. The Premier League was in its very early days, enjoying unprecedented hours of coverage with Sky Sports helping to give the sport a bright new look for the paying public - the majority of whom were sitting at home comfortably in their armchairs. Paul Gascoigne’s tears added credence to arguments that footballers - and football fans - were capable of being in touch with their emotions. The book resonated with a generation of football fans when the sport was going through something of an identity change in the wake of England’s heroic failure at the 1990 World Cup. When Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch was released on September 12, 1992, few could have predicted it would be hailed as a cultural and football cornerstone all these years later. “I fell in love with football as I was later to fall in love with women: suddenly, inexplicably, uncritically, giving no thought to the pain or disruption it would bring.” Fever Pitch, Nick Hornby Savages by don winslow5/21/2023 With his little boy, his elderly father and the tattered remnants of his loyal crew of soldiers, he makes the classic American migration to California to start a new life.īut the Feds track him down and want Danny to do them a favor that could make him a fortune or kill him.Īnd when Hollywood starts shooting a film based on his former life, Danny demands a piece of the action and begins to rebuild his criminal empire. Following the epic, ambitious, instant New York Times bestseller City on Fire, “The Godfather for our generation” (Adrian McKinty), comes the dramatic second novel in an epic crime trilogy from Don Winslow, #1 internationally bestselling author of the Cartel trilogy (The Power of the Dog, The Cartel and The Border). I was born for this by alice oseman5/21/2023 I know I had these kind of moments in my life and I did some crazy things to see my favorite boys band of all times as well. Who has never dreamed of being on the other side, seeing what celebrities actually feel like? Who has never fan-girled over a celebrity or a boys-band for ages, dreaming of meeting them. Slowly, but surely, I have realized that I appreciate stories dealing with celebrities and fandom a whole lot. If you don’t know her, this book or anything about it just yet, read on and add everything to your TBR, you won’t regret it. If there is something I can say about Alice Oseman, it’s that she is one of my favorite authors of all times and each of her books just got better and better. I still don’t know how I got lucky enough to read I Was Born For This, but damn. I really enjoyed it and obviously had to read her sophomore novel, Radio Silence, which I loved. I discovered Alice Oseman years ago, when she first published her debut novel, Solitaire. The ravenels book 25/21/2023 She definitely grows a lot throughout this book! I liked Helen enough, and I thought she had a good character arc. I loved that Rhys didn’t fit the societal norm for this time period and that he so unabashedly didn’t care. I don’t know why, but there is something about a gruff, rough around the edges hero that just works for me. I didn’t love this one as much as book 1 – which is apparently an unpopular opinion! This had elements that I absolutely loved, but this missed the mark in other aspects. ➸ Content Warnings: Classism, Sexism My Thoughts ➸ Rhys Winterborne: 30, Welsh, Owner of massive department store in London, Self-made ➸ Helen Ravenel: 21, Quiet, Shy, Innocent, Cousin to the current Earl Devon, Oldest Ravenel sister But Rhys’ enemies are conspiring against them and Helen is keeping a secret that might ruin it all. And so, they are refugees in Switzerland, with no way back home, even if they wanted it, and they would not want it. When Hitler sweeps to power one of his first acts is to confiscate all the family's property in Berlin. She sees him sooner than she expects, because he sends for them to come and join him in Switzerland, just the day before the German elections. That is alarming enough for Anna and her brother and mother who are left behind in Berlin. So he packs his suitcase and leaves for Switzerland on the train in the middle of the night. But Anna's father is a well-known Jewish writer, and someone warns him, just in time, that his passport might soon be taken away from him. Of course, in 1933 no-one ever imagined in their wildest dreams that he might actually try to murder them all. Hitler is going to stop the Jews, whatever that means. But while she is busy with school life, Hitler is about to be elected to office by the German people. That's what really happened to Anna in this book. Have you ever lain in bed at night and wondered how it would be if the very worst thing actually happened? Perhaps you can imagine losing your home through flood, earthquake or war? Whatever the problem is, you can almost believe that you might be able to cope, so long as you have all your important family with you and a suitcase with a few special possessions. |
